Best Kettle For Hard Water To Stop Limescale

by Natalie Knowles |
Updated on

The best kettle for hard water will have a built-in filter to stop limescale. This could be in the form of a removable filter cartridge or a mesh guard in the spout. Hard water is typically a problem in areas with limestone, sandstone and chalk. Water seeps through these soft, sedimentary rocks, resulting in a high mineral content. It sounds like it should be healthy, but it's an absolute pain for kitchen appliances, causing a chalky limescale residue to build up inside kettles, dishwashers, washing machines and coffee machines. 60 per cent of the UK has hard water, and without regular descaling, it can shorten the lifespan of an appliance. But before you reach for the bicarbonate of soda, it's great to know there are kettles that are specially designed to filter hard water. Now, your Horlicks no longer has to have the texture of Pepto Bismol.

Nobody likes a furred element. So, in addition to an anti-limescale filter, be sure to opt for a kettle with a concealed heating element. Essentially, the kettle will have a flat bottom, so it's much easier to clean. By choosing a kettle with a hidden heating element, limescale won't have extra surfaces to grip. Yes, you could buy a separate water filter jug to combat hard water, but in some kitchens, that's going to take up valuable room in the fridge. Available worktop space is definitely a consideration when buying a kettle. Fab, if you have space for a hot water dispenser or matching kettle and toaster set, but if your kitchen is bijou, then you may be looking for a kettle that's pint-size.

Electric kettles boil faster than stove-top kettles, which gives the limescale less opportunity to form. A rapid boil is a must-have feature, as this helps further reduce limescale, as well as deliver your cup of tea or coffee pronto. Conversely, limescale can impact the efficiency of your kettle, meaning it'll take longer to boil, which in the long run can affect its lifespan. And yes, the novelty of smart kettles makes every hot drink a par-tea, with anti-limescale, voice control and temperature control, but not everyone has the budget for an ikettle.

Best Kettle For Hard Water At A Glance:

Kettles are typically made from stainless steel, with some plastic and glass options out there too. Bit of a flawed name for our favourite domestic metal, as stainless steel does accrue limescale. And a scaled-up kettle is about as much use as a chocolate teapot when you want a clean brew. So, if you find descaling a tad tedious, here are our recommended kettles for hard water... Best for large-capacity

Breville BRITA HotCup Hot Water DispenserAmazon/Breville

While this isn't technically a kettle, it's the best way to achieve the same great filtration as the Russell Hobb filter kettles but with a better capacity. Perfect for tea or coffee lovers looking for a quick caffeine fix, this Breville BRITA HotCup Hot Water Dispenser is designed to deliver a hot cup of water in under 50 seconds. It has a huge 1.8-litre capacity to hold enough water for seven to nine cups and has variable dispense, so it can auto-switch off if you're busy preparing other drinks. It has the BRITA filter technology and the bonus of a permanent limescale filter built-in too.

Customer review: "This is genius, it boils a cup of water in less than a minute. Turn it to large cup for a full mug of water but turn it down so it has space for milk or when using a smaller cup. I've plugged in to a smart plug... get your cup ready and on the drip tray. Turn off the plug, press the start button on the machine (yes it stays down) and when you want your coffee just ask Alexa to turn on the plug (I called it kettle)."

Our Verdict: Best Kettle For Hard Water

We recommend the Russell Hobbs Brita Purity Filter Clear Plastic Kettle 22851; it's an absolute bargain price for a kettle that has built-in Brita filtration. Simultaneously boiling and filtering the water results in a clean cuppa and saves time filtering the water first. Say goodbye to scum once and for all, and protect your kettle against limescale. An indicator on the kettle will tell you when to change the filter cartridge, usually every few weeks.

FAQs: Best Kettle For Hard Water

What is limescale?

Limescale is a hard and chalky deposit that is mostly made up of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). It's found mainly where hot water runs - in kettles, pipework and showers. Limescale is more common in hard water areas, and over time, it can cause some real damage if it's not removed. Descaling solutions and water-softening treatments can help.

Is it safe to use a kettle with limescale?

Yes, it's perfectly safe for you, and in fact, research suggests that the heightened mineral levels in hard water help to fulfil your calcium and magnesium intake. Good levels of calcium can help promote strong bones, regulate muscle contractions and make sure your blood clots normally.

However, while it might be safe for you, it tastes rank, and it isn't such good news for your kettle.

Limescale build-up reduces the lifespan of your kettle, which is why it's important to descale it regularly.

How do I clean a kettle?

It's probably the most used appliance in your kitchen. And over time, limescale (a.k.a. insoluble calcium carbonate) can build up inside your kettle, so it's important you know how to descale it.

Clean your kettle and descale it every few months or more frequently if you notice a build-up or live in a hard water area.

Although it's not harmful to your health, limescale can cause your drinks to have a metallic taste, as well as leaving ghastly flakes in your drinks.

You can buy water descaling devices and kits that will remove limescale much more quickly than any household or natural method. We recommend EcoZone Multi-Purpose Appliance Descaler. Alternatively, consider Oust Powerful All Purpose Descaler.

Alternatively, you can descale your kettle with Bicarbonate of soda and water. Fill the kettle around three quarters of the way with water and add a large tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda before boiling the kettle. Once boiled, allow the kettle to sit for an hour before pouring out the water and rinsing. Fill the kettle with water again and boil to remove any lingering bicarbonate of soda flavour and rinse. Similarly, you can use distilled white vinegar or lemon juice using the same method.

Finally, to further prevent limescale build-up, don't leave standing water in the kettle. If possible, leave the lid open for a little while to allow any water to evaporate.
