Ryan Gilmore
Ryan Gilmore is our Deputy Autos and Tools Editor for A Modern Kitchen. In this role he oversees the best-of listicles, how-to guides and product reviews for the brand. He does the same for CAR and Parkers.
Since joining Bauer Media in 2020 as an Commercial Content Writer, he has established himself as an expert in all things automotive, but also has a particular interest in the kitchenware and cooking.
When he's not found cleaning his car or racing on his Xbox, Ryan can be found in the kitchen, mastering his favourite meals or testing out the latest in the world of kitchen gadgets.
Writing
Ryan's pocket money was always spent on car magazines. Reading road tests and huge travel features was one of his favourite thing to do during his formative years. It was this interest in reading that led him to complete an MA in Automotive Journalism from Coventry University, graduating with a Distinction in 2020. While he was a student he wrote content for DriveTribe and Hot Cars, focusing on classic cars and sim racing content. It was this course that also taught him the value of quality consumer journalism and product reviews.
Cooking
Ryan developed a real flair for cooking while his was a student. One-too-many pitiful Pot Noodles led him to discover the joys of cooking healthy and nutritious meals without having to break the bank. Since then he's expanded his cooking horizons, trying out new recipes and methods of cooking. His poor cupboards are heaving with spices and pastes from different experiments.
Culinary highlights for him include a Michelin Star experience in Cuneo, Italy, and mastering the art of cooking the perfect pan-fried steak. He's also in the process of building up his forever kitchen, looking for investment pieces to perfect his cooking experience. Next step, a proper cast iron casserole pan.
Tech
One area of particular interest to Ryan is the explosion of new kitchen gadgets and whether they can improve the cooking experience. Whether it be something as simple as a coffee grinder or as complex as a multicooker with a dozen settings, Ryan will always be on hand to see just how useful they are to live with.
Ryan's areas of expertise:
• Small appliances
• Coffee
• Knives and utensils
Ryan's top tips for shoppers:
"Invest in your kitchenware, it will last longer and make your life so much easier. I went through so many nasty knives before investing in a quality set with a proper sharpener. Not only did it make my cuts cleaner, but it made cooking far more enjoyable."
"Ask yourself honestly if you'll use the item you're thinking of using. A pie maker or fondue kit may sound great in theory but ask yourself honestly if it'll spend it's entire life unloved at the back of a cupboard."
