Best food and drink gifts for Christmas 2023

Gifts under £50

Best gingerbread house

At Christmas, Biscuiteers HQ turns into a real-life Santa’s workshop with 100,000 biscuits hand-iced each week in November and December, which is quite frankly incredible! If you've found yourselves mesmerised by the extremely talented icers on Biscuiteers' Instagram page, try it out for yourself by hand icing your own biscuits or gift someone else with a DIY Christmas Baubles kit or a DIY Gingerbread House. There's nothing more festive than the scent of ginger wafting around the home before the presents are unwrapped.

What's included? Presented in a beautifully decorated tin, there are six pre-basked gingerbread house pieces, royal icing, piping bags, a set of sweet decorations and a step-by-step guide

Customer review: "My kids and I loved putting together the house. It was easy and fun! The best DIY kit I have bought."

Best alternative advent calendar

Natalie Knowles
Price: £19.99

'It's Christmas Thyme' with The Little Trees Bees And Seeds Gardening Advent Calendar 2023. This wonderful kitchen garden advent calendar contains 25 varieties of premium heirloom vegetables, herbs and salad seeds. All of the seeds are non-GMO and heritage – with common and unusual varieties. It's for beginners too; in one of the envelopes, there is a special grow guide, full of sowing and gardening advice. The box is 23 x 33 x 2cm and totally plastic-free. The Little Trees Bees And Seeds Company lovingly hand-pack their products and there is a contact email address on the box for growing advice and gardening questions.

Our review: "With lots of gardeners in the family I'm sure this generous collection of 25 seed packets will be shared out between my aunts and uncles. Primarily, I'm gifting it to my Dad, who is a seasoned gardener with a large vegetable plot and raised beds for herbs. The seed packets are contained within festive numbered envelopes. There's jute twine and small wooden pegs in the box, so you can string up the envelopes around your kitchen or shed. The advent calendar comes in a cardboard box that's larger than a letterbox, so if you're gifting this to a loved one do make sure they're at home or there's a safe place to put a parcel.

"We opened one envelope to see how the seeds are packaged and we were very pleased to discover a pack of premium heritage tomato seeds with specific growing instructions on the packet.

"All-in-all, this is the perfect advent calendar for my family and will continue the tradition I have of giving green-fingered loved ones vegetable seeds at Christmas. During the colder months, I've always felt that seeds symbolise the hope and promise of spring and summer. This gift is a wonderful way to look forward to a new year of growing."

Best foodie book

Price: £17.27

Actor, food lover and cocktail expert, Stanley Tucci's book is a number one Sunday Times Bestseller for a reason. Every food fan, or just in general Stanley fan (that's us) should have this book in their stocking for Christmas.

Customer review: "Bought to read on holiday in Italy and it was the perfect choice. As a fan of Stanley Tucci, this book was a fabulous look into his life, as someone has already said, it’s as though you can hear his wonderful voice as you are reading it. Lots of laugh out loud moments and I loved every page. I have since tried out some of the recipes featured too."

Best non-alcoholic sparkling drink

Make the most of your friend-mas with this sparkling elderflower drink from Cawston Press. Bottled for sharing, these special-edition 750ml glass bottles are perfect for parties and good times with your loved ones. Cawston Press make their drinks from pressed fruit juice, no concentrates, and a 125ml serving is only 28 calories.

Our review: "There's a reason why Cawston Press is always at the top of my Christmas list. They make punchy, freshly-pressed and delicious sparkling drinks. I am a big fan of the Elderflower flavour, which is botanical and refreshing. Combining apple with elderflower for a drink... whose idea was that? It's genius. Move over generic fizzy drinks, hello Cawston."

Best festive tonic mixer

Top Tonic

Tested

Get your gin pouring no matter the time of year with this bitter, tangy and floral tonic. It's low in calories, comes with no artificial sweeteners and has a honeyed finish. We couldn't recommend this mixer more.

Our review: "London Essence Co. is a go-to for the festive season. With a wide range of craft sodas, ginger beers and outrageously-delicious tonics, you can't go wrong. The flavours are botanical, fruity and lip-smacking. Elderflower & Blood Orange pairs perfectly with gin and makes a great gift for loved one who lives a tipple."

Best coffee advent calendar

Start the Christmas countdown with this Nespresso Vertuo Advent Calendar. The rich red and gold cube measures 24cm all-round and costs £39. It's Alpine-inspired or "Fusalp" as it says on the box, the word derives from the French word "fuseau" meaning from the Alps. There is a gold vector-style pattern of mountains that is reminiscent of Toblerone. The Nespresso Fusalp advent calendar is a collaboration with the brand Fusalp, famous for luxury ski wear with an chevron pattern. The Nespresso Fusalp Advent Calendar is also available for Original system Nespresso coffee machines in an enchanting cream and gold colourway for £35. Also, Nespresso offer free delivery.

Our review: "This coffee advent calendar is a luxurious red cube printed in gold. The lid expands as you open it and inside there's another cube. It's clever paper-engineering, with a handle of sorts on the underside to ensure the inner box comes out smoothly. There are 17 capsules of high quality roast and ground coffee. Also, there are five capsules that are special flavours, including Barista Creations Sweet Vanilla, Roasted Hazelnut, Rich Chocolate and a Seasonal Delight Spices Flavour. In addition, there are two capsules that contain a decaffeinated blend, plus a gift to open behind the larger 24th door. I opened one door (all in the name of a fair review) and the bauble-like Vertuo capsule popped out with ease. This really is a wonderful gift for owners of Vertuo coffee machines, such as the Vertuo Pop and the Vertuo Next. I can't wait to savour this coffee tasting journey and get a surprise behind the 24th door."

Best Christmas gift for tea lovers

ember mug 2 copper
Price: £149.95

uk.ember.com

There's nothing worse than forgetting about a cup of tea and realising it's gone cold. Even worse when you get distracted in many meetings and you take a sip and yuk. The Ember Mug 2 is here to solve that problem and in a super stylish colourway. The new Metallic Collection comes in copper, gold, rose gold and silver, ideal colours for a luxury festive gift for someone who loves tea.

Tried & Tested by A Modern Kitchen: "After a tricky start figuring out the accompanying app, the Ember Mug 2 has honestly been life-changing when it comes to drinking a cup of tea. I like my tea hot, but I drink half and then forget about it so always have to reheat it in the microwave. This is now no longer the case as the Ember keeps it at the perfect temperature until I've finished my brew. It's much better suited for tea as it slightly changes the taste of coffee, and it does require regular charging as it runs out after two uses."
